20 things you didn’t know about Windows XP

1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previous versions of Windows were coy about how long they went between boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina. Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option, and then type ’systeminfo’. The computer will produce a lot of useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep these, type ’systeminfo > info.txt’. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later with Notepad. (Professional Edition only).

How to Access Blocked Websites

Access blocked websites at school or work

We suggest workarounds to bypass internet filters and corporate firewalls to help you unblock access to restricted websites at universities or office

Blocking access to undesirable Web sites has been a common government tactic but China, Iran, Saudi Arabia are believed to extend greater censorship over the net than any other country in the world.

Most of the blocked or blacklisted sites in Saudi Arabia are about sex, religion, women, health, politics and pop culture. They even block access to websites that sell bathing suits. In China, webites containing sexually explicit content are blocked plus sites on sensitive topics such as Tibet, Taiwan, and dissident activity.

Other popular sites that are often blocked in offices, school and workplaces are Google News, Typepad, Orkut, ebay, Blogger blogs, YouTube, Blogger, Facebook, MySpace, Pandora, Bebo, Photobucket, Yahoo! Messenger, AOL AIM, Flickr, last.fm, etc.

There are however always legitimate reasons to bypass the internet filters and visit the blocked websites. The following methods will help you access blocked websites in school, college, office or at home.

Approach 1: There are websites Anonymizer who fetch the blocked site/ page from their servers and display it to you. As far as the service provider is concerned you are viewing a page from Anonymizer and not the blocked site.

Approach 2: To access the blocked Web site. type the IP number instead of the URL in the address bar. But if the ISP software maps the IP address to the web server (reverse DNS lookup), the website will remain blocked.

Approach 3: Use a URL redirection service like tinyurl.com or snipurl.com. These domain forward services sometimes work as the address in the the url box remain the redirect url and do not change to the banned site.

Access Google Talk Chat or GMail in Office

Approach 4: Use Google Mobile Search. Google display the normal HTML pages as if you are viewing them on a mobile phone. During the translation, Google removes the javascript content and CSS scripts and breaks a longer page into several smaller pages. Google Mobile

Use Mobile browsers as proxy to open restricted websites

Approach 5: Enter the URL in Google or Yahoo search and then visit the cached copy of the page. To retrieve the page more quickly from Google’s cache, click “Cached Text Only” while the browser is loading the page from cache.

Approach 6: You can access blocked or restricted websites by using Google language tools service as a proxy server. Basically, you have Google translate your page from English to English (or whatever language you like). Assuming that Google isn’t blacklisted in your country or school, you should be able to access any site with this method. Google Proxy

Unblock restricted websites that require login

Approach 7: Anonymous Surfing - Browse the internet via a proxy server. A proxy server (or proxies) is a normal computer that hides the identity of computers on its network from the Internet. Which means that only the address of the proxy server is visible to the world and not of those computers that are using it to browse the Internet. Just visit the proxy server website with your Web browser and enter a URL (website address) in the form provided.

Unblock access to Bebo, Myspace, Orkut, Facebook

Get Firefox with Google Toolbar for better browsing

We recommend Firefox web browser for a faster browsing experience. It’s more safe and integrated with the Google Web search.

Say No to Software Piracy - Downloading Serials or Cracks from Internet Could be Dangerous

Do not download pirated software or patches from the internet - When you download a crack, you can be almost certain that some bad things will be included.

If you really can’t afford the software you are looking for, contact the author and explain your situation. There is a big chance that you get a reduction or that you get the software for free.

Most crackers will include trojans that they have written themselves and are therefore not detected by virus scanners. Many cracks will include spyware.

The trojans allow the cracker to access your computer. If you use your computer to make payments by credit card or to do online banking, the cracker will have access to your passwords and pin codes and will use your credit card or bank account to buy things.

The spyware can break many things in your computer. It can make your browser unusable. There is also a good chance that viruses are included.

Now you may think that serials are safer. You don’t need to install anything on your computer to use them. But if you think this, you are wrong. The web pages where you find the serials are a dangerous place. Many of these web pages exploit security holes in your browser, and can install trojans, spyware and viruses on your computer just by visiting the web page.

Just searching on the web for web pages that contain serials can damage your computer, can give the crackers access to your credit card, and can install spyware that tracks everything you do.

Better Safe than Sorry. Alway buy original software.

How to Burn Youtube Videos to DVD

How to create a DVD movie of video downloaded from Google Video, Youtube or Myspace so that these videos can be watched on the TV screen ?

That’s exactly the requirement of Sarah Chamma. She writes:

I’m trying to figure out how to burn YouTube videos on DVDs (not CDs). Could you please give it to me step by step, clear as crystal?

What systems to use, how to burn more than one video on one DVD, etc.? I don’t consider myself terribly computer literate.

Before you decide to watch Youtube videos on TV via your DVD player, keep in mind that the video quality will be very low - The video resolution on sites like youtube or Google Video is 320x240 while DVD frame size is 720x480 for NTSC or 720x576 for PAL.

If you are still game, here’s how you can burn one or more video onto a DVD without spending a penny:

Step 1: Download the Internet Video to your hard disk in Flash Video format (extension: flv) using any of the free tools like iTube, vixy.net or keepVid.com. [Details here & here]

Step 2: Get the free DVD authoring software called DVD Flick. The software takes all your videos, encodes them and burns a DVD that can be played on any DVD player. Follow this step-by-step guide on how to burn videos using DVD Flick.

With DVD Flick, you can also add Titles, subtitles and audio tracks to your Youtube DVD project to make them more interesting. Keep your Blank DVD disc ready.

Update: Sarah was finally able to transfer Youtube videos to Youtube. She writes - "Wow! Thanks a million. I did it! I’m so proud of myself. I can’t thank you enough for that."

YouTube Removed a Video ? Watch It With Deleted YouTube Video Viewer

"This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by XYZ Inc." - That’s the message you see on Youtube.com when they remove a copyrighted video clip from the Youtube website.

Sometimes the video is unavailable when the owner himself removed the video but it’s still showing up in the video search results. Youtube will also delete videos that are porn or NSFW.

It is however possible to watch deleted videos on Youtube - Just like Google Cache stores a copy of a webpage on Google servers, Youtube may maintain a copy of raw video on their servers even when the video has been taken off the main website.

To retrieve this "deleted video", just supply the Youtube video id (available in the video URL) to Youtube Infamousx, and this service may retrieve the deleted video from Youtube for you. [via GHacks.net]

This trick will not work for videos that have been permanently deleted from the Youtube servers.
